The annual Grizzly Race is always an exciting event at Check House, and this year was no exception. As the runners powered past our home, residents and staff gathered in the car park, wrapped up warm, with hot drinks and snacks in hand, ready to cheer them on. The atmosphere was full of energy as we watched hundreds of runners tackle this famously gruelling race, all while enjoying a wonderful afternoon together.
The Grizzly is not just any race—it’s one of the most challenging long-distance events in the world. First held in 1988, this demanding 20-mile course takes competitors through rocky beaches, thick forests, and even waist-high bogs. It’s a true test of endurance and determination, making it thrilling to watch. For our residents, seeing the runners push themselves to the limit was both inspiring and entertaining, sparking plenty of conversations about past sporting achievements and adventures.
This year was even more special as two of our very own team members took part in the race. Seeing familiar faces among the runners made the event particularly exciting, with residents waving, cheering, and offering words of encouragement as they passed. The sense of pride and support was truly heart-warming, bringing everyone closer together. It was a reminder of the strong community spirit we have at Check House—whether it’s supporting a local event or simply spending time together, we always make the most of every opportunity to celebrate.
