Ruby Lodge Care Home in Thirsk recently hosted its first-ever Wellbeing Hub event, bringing together residents, carers, and community groups for a day dedicated to health, wellness, and support. With an impressive showcase of services and resources, the event aimed to help connections and raise awareness of the invaluable support available within the local area.
The event featured a variety of specialist speakers and engaging activities designed to promote overall well-being. Liga and Kate from the Community Works team emphasised the importance of raising awareness, stating, "When people know what’s available, they can access the right support at the right time. The Wellbeing Hub has been an incredible way to bring together residents, carers, and service providers to ensure everyone knows how to access the help they need." Their team offers a range of services, including Car Sharing, Meals on Wheels, and Support Cafés.
Georgia Thompson, Retail Director at Specsavers, highlighted the power of collaboration, and sharing, "Events like these are unique. They help us connect with other services and find new ways to support the community together. We were able to showcase our home visit services and share how we assist with both eye care and hearing support."
A focus on fitness and wellbeing added to the day, as Fitness Instructor Beryl inspired attendees with her message: "Exercise is for everyone! We want to encourage people of all abilities to move their bodies and find joy in fitness."
The Wellbeing Hub also shone a light on creative initiatives designed to enhance the dignity and comfort of individuals in care. Michele from Thirsk Ladies Club led a heartwarming project to create catheter covers and syringe driver bags, sourcing materials through generous donations and local charity shops in support of Herriot Hospice.
Specialist speaker Melissa, a Continence Specialist Nurse, provided essential advice on bladder health, stressing the importance of tailored approaches to treatment. "Pelvic floor health plays a crucial role in continence support, and bladder irritation varies from person to person. It’s vital to take an individualised approach," she explained.
Safety was another key theme, with Community Safety Officer Alison offering essential advice on home fire safety, smoke alarms, and carbon monoxide detectors. Her insights were particularly relevant for vulnerable groups, including families with young children and those living in flats, ensuring that important safety information reached those who needed it most.
Residents and attendees expressed their appreciation for the event’s wealth of knowledge and support. Resident Gloria summed up the feeling, saying, "This has been a wonderful experience. The information shared today has been invaluable to all of us."
Home Manager Holly Hunton reflected on the event, sharing, "Our Wellbeing Hub at Ruby Lodge Care Home has created a space for experts, local groups, and individuals to come together. We’re committed to ensuring that important services are accessible to those who need them, and we’re excited to continue supporting our local community in any way we can."
