HC-One’s Greatwood House Care Home in Denton, Tameside, Greater Manchester, will open their doors to their local community, prospective residents and their families for an Open Day on Friday, May 9, from 2pm onwards.

The event marks the completion of the Shrewsbury community’s refurbishment to enhance the experience of residents living within the community. The reopening of Greatwood House’s beautifully refurbished Shrewsbury community also includes an extension of the community with an additional nine residential dementia bedrooms in addition to the existing 22 bedrooms and further communal spaces for residents to socialise in. The refurb work to the corridors, Shrewsbury lounge, dining room, and bedrooms has consisted of painting and decorating, new flooring, electrical works and a new kitchen servery being installed.

The Open Day will provide the local community, prospective residents and their families an opportunity to see the exceptional facilities first hand, meet the dedicated team, and discover what makes Greatwood House a standout choice for care in Denton, including how the home and care is designed to promote independence and personalised care with residents' comfort, dignity, wellbeing, and happiness in mind.

More broadly, Greatwood House Care Home is currently benefitting from an exciting c. £558,000 refurbishment and upgrade as part of a major investment programme launched by owners HC-One.

Greatwood House, a 60 bedded residential and residential dementia care home, combines state-of-the-art facilities with excellence in personalised care to ensure residents enjoy the best possible quality of life.

Residents living at Greatwood House Care Home can enjoy sustainable, modernised and enhanced living environments - including a newly refurbished and decorated community benefitting from great indoor and outdoor spaces.

Greatwood House’s Home Manager, Odette Lilley and the Wellbeing Team held a resident meeting ahead of refurbishment works taking place where residents inputted and chose the designs and colour schemes of the bedrooms and lounges of the newly refurbished Shrewsbury and Elderberry communities.

Greatwood House Care Home was refurbished by HC-One’s Interior Design Team’s Rachel Clark who spoke with residents and relatives to gather feedback, ideas and inspiration, picking out colour schemes and fabrics for the chosen design scheme implemented, to add personal elements and touches to the home’s décor to make it a home from home.

The interior design scheme consisted of shades of lavender & duck egg to create a sense of calm and tranquillity within the spaces. The rooms received full new furniture, decoration, lighting, curtains and flooring. The bedrooms within the community were also all refurbished with new decoration, carpets, lighting, curtains, beds and furniture, using a ruby and mustard colour scheme. A ‘Jobs around the house’ life station has also been added to a breakout zone in the corridor of the home. This helps residents living with dementia reminisce of past days and gives them an activity to enjoy within the space.

The refurbishment works at Greatwood House began in January 2025 and is due to be complete in June 2025 with the work being complete for the Shrewsbury community at the end of March 2025.

The residential, and residential dementia care home refurbishment forms part of HC-One’s ongoing £93 million refurbishment and upgrade programme. This programme will benefit over 200 of HC-One homes, including Greatwood House, and forms part of HC-One’s mission to be the first-choice care provider in the communities it serves.

As the largest care home refurbishment programme in the local authority and NHS funded social care sector, HC-One is transforming its homes for the benefit of the residents and colleagues who live and work in them, and for the local communities they serve. The upgrades mean that every HC-One home will be equipped to meet the needs of an ageing population with increasingly complex care needs – including dementia care needs.

Odette Lilley, Home Manager at HC-One’s Greatwood House Care Home, said:

“We are committed to fostering an environment that really feels like home, and décor and facilities are an important part of this.

“We’re really excited to re-open our Shrewsbury community which offers residential dementia care services to members of the local community.

“We look forward to welcoming in the local community in to visit the home and view our newly refurbished and reopened Shrewsbury community.”
