View Full Details of Sotwell Hill HouseWhat a little gem we have found !!! The house is just home from home in a wonderful setting which is what we wanted for my brother as he had always lived with his mother and father and has now found a new family where he is very happy. From day one there has been nothing but kindness and utmost care, with staff always going the extra mile to meet his needs. From a lovely greeting with a smile when the door is opened, the staff are cheery, unobtrusive and very helpful if anything is needed. My brother is asked daily whether he would like to eat upstairs or downstairs and looks forward to the varied menus. What is really lovely is it is like a small hotel but with all the genuine care to go with it. You are free to come and go as you please with a bus stop at the end of the road that is minutes from Wallingford town centre or if unable a weekly activity sheet is produced and put into the rooms in addition to outings and frequent special events that the families are also invited to.
My mother has been a resident at Sotwell Hill House for almost 3 years. She visited a number of homes and chose Sotwell Hill House over others because of its warm and relaxed atmosphere. She also loved the fact that, unlike some care homes, you can fully personalise your room. She continues to be very happy there and praises the staff for their friendliness and attentiveness. I have found the level of communication from the management team to be excellent and have valued the individualised care they provide. The home is in a beautiful setting with a wonderful, large garden that has many seating areas beside attractive flower beds.
Mum has been at Sotwell Hill House for almost 5 years. I have found the care, attention and atmosphere within the house outstanding. Mum is so happy there and it really feels like she is in a really homely place. She has as much independence as possible, yet with people around in case of need. I cannot recommend it highly enough. If you want a warm, friendly, caring and homely environment, it's the best thing we ever did.
Our mother spent the last two years of her 100-year-long life at Sotwell Hill House and we could not have asked for anything more from the home throughout this time. She was treated with dignity, respect and genuine love by all the staff, especially over the final few weeks of her decline. Our thanks go to all the staff, carers, management, catering, domestic and grounds - but, as they say, the buck stops at the top with the manager, who seems boundless both in energy and compassion. As another reviewer has said, Sotwell Hill House was not built as a care home, so the rooms are not all identical units on either side of a corridor. But what it may lack in terms of convenient access it gains in terms of character and appearance, inside and out (the gardens are extensive and delightful). Sotwell Hill House is a comparatively small, independent, family-run facility, all of which make it into a home dedicated to caring for the elderly.
Our mother spent three weeks at Sotwell Hill for respite care. The staff showed great kindness towards her; the manager in particular went above and beyond to enable her to move in quickly and feel at home once she was there. Mum had a nice big room overlooking the garden and was able to get the rest and recuperation she needed at the time. She was encouraged to go down for meals and socialise with the other residents but was able to eat in her room if she wanted to. The atmosphere was friendly and the home was flexible about visiting hours: we were never made to feel we were in the way. The building is somewhat old-fashioned, presumably because it was not originally designed as a care home. The large garden, away from the main road, must be a bonus in the warmer months. The communal areas, such as the dining room and the lounge, are generously sized, with plenty of space for activities.
The care home looked after my mother with care and dignity in the last year of her life.
We have known the family who own Sotwell Hill House for many years and would have no hesitation in recommending the home to others. The approach is caring but professional, the residents are treated with compassion and respect in their final days. My mum was not one to join in organised activities but there was a varied programme for those who were interested, and although gentle encouragement was given to join in one meal a day in the dining room, her wish for privacy and eating in her own room was respected. Sadly my mum didn't enjoy the Sotwell Hill House 'family' for very long as her health was quite poor when she entered in January 2020, but the level of care increased to nurse her through her final days, and the inhouse carers worked closely with the GP and district nurse to ensure she was comfortable. No reliance on agency staff here - many of the carers have worked in the home for a long time and so continuity of care is ensured.
I am so pleased my aunt is with you. The staff are kind and friendly - genuinely caring, and there is nothing officious about it. The atmosphere is warm and cosy.
We felt so lucky to have found Sotwell Hill House - a place of safety at such a difficult time of life and so much more. My Aunt and our family found a place full of friendships and genuine care. The support we received from everyone guided us through the ups and downs of the final years of a long life. There were new friends and activities, live music and flowers, poetry, crafts, quizzes and outings and a rhythm of life we could all settle into. As my Aunts health deteriorated the weight of her care increased but Sotwell Hill House was her home everyone knew her and Doctors, district nurses and wonderful carers and staff managed her last days with dignity and affection. Our family felt supported and privileged. A great friend had recommended the home to us and I will continue to recommend it to others.
Constantly impressed by the commitment and quality of the management and staff. The rural setting is beautiful and residents easily make their home in these peaceful and comfortable surroundings. Privacy is respected but there is also ample opportunity to socialise and join in with a varied activity programme (provided by staff and regular outside providers). Trips and outings are many and varied and personal services such as chiropody, hairdressing and eye appointments are all offered in house. Attention to the smallest detail is carefully observed and a variety of excuses for celebration are enjoyed by all whether a birthday, a public holiday or the annual strawberry tea and brass band afternoon. We highly recommend Sotwell Hill House.
