View Full Details of Portcullis HouseMum had become very lonely living alone and she was isolated due to declining mobility. Dementia and Alzheimers was also taking hold. Despite my brother and I's best efforts to keep her in her own home (we did not live nearby) she was no longer safe or happy. After living in the same house for over 60 years, we were concerned that mum would not settle into a care home. We need not have been concerned as mum settled into life at Portcullis House very quickly. She enjoys the companionship, activities, food and regular hot drinks and sweets treats. She is always clean and tidy. Portcullis House is 'homely' and comfortable. When the weather is bright, mum enjoys sitting in the conservatory where she watches the birds (as she previously did in her own home). I have only ever seen staff be kind and courteous to mum (and to the other residents and to me). We are so pleased that we chose Portcullis House for mum. It is a huge relief to us that mum is safe, warm, well fed and happy.
I recently enjoyed Christmas Day with my Dad at Portcullis House. It was a privilege to be included in the home's festivities. The skilled and dedicated staff worked tirelessly to ensure the residents enjoyed a special and joyous day. There were thoughtful gifts for everyone and a wonderful, traditional Christmas lunch with all the trimmings. The calm and nurturing ethos of the home shone through as it does each and every day.
My 96 years old mother had to move into care in 2024 as she was no longer safe in her own home. Thanks to the care, compassion and professionalism of all staff she settled in very quickly. Staff take time to understand and meet her needs. All residents are treated as individuals, with respect and dignity. Varied and stimulating activities are provided but residents have a choice to join in. Visitors and dogs are welcome. A homely atmosphere prevails with lots of care, laughter and kindness.
Putting an elderly mother into a residential home is always daunting. All the staff at Portcullis House made this task much easier. They are friendly, kind and helpful. Mum settled in well, loves the excellent food and especially enjoys the varied visits out and the games and activities provided. Dare I say a home from home. It makes our life better knowing that she is in safe and friendly hands.
In my experience, Portcullis appears to be a good, well-run care home with friendly, caring and helpful staff. My only minor observations are:- 1 - The overall accommodation is a little cramped and my Brother's room is not ensuite. His previous room, in a different care home with the same company, was ensuite. 2 - When phoning residents there appears to be nowhere private to have a conversation given the range constraints of the mobile handset used by the residents. 3 - Management responses to emails can be slow and on the odd occasion, unanswered.
I came here as a new resident at Portcullis House in September 2023 - long enough to obtain a balanced picture of life here. While nowhere is perfect, Portcullis House offers an experience in the day-to-day running of the home which is very good, going a long way to achieving such an aim. I find all of the staff are friendly and helpful and efficient and calm. The food here is of a high standard taking into account the scale of catering required. As I am here for life I am happy to be part of the community, knowing that they are doing their best for me.
I think everything to help residents is very good. I would definitely recommend it to other future residents and the meals here are brilliant.
Portcullis House is welcoming and with no unpleasant smells. The staff are caring, sympathetic and very understanding of the residents. It is a lovely homely atmosphere. My brother's room is light and airy and kept spotlessly clean. I am always greeted with friendliness and any concerns about my brother are sympathetically addressed. I feel happy in the knowledge that my beloved brother is being well cared for.
I think that Portcullis House is run by lovely staff who care for my mum with love.
I have found all members of staff to be very helpful to both my mum and the rest of my family. They are also very friendly when we visit and keep me well-informed of things I need to know.
We have found every aspect of the services provided by Portcullis House to be first class. My mother-in-law is very happy, contented and well-cared for as she often mentions to us. When visiting we find the staff very welcoming and courteous. My mother-in-law's room is always clean and obviously well-maintained. Overall we would rate Portcullis House as excellent.
A welcoming friendly care home where you feel part of the family and the staff know the residents, their likes and dislikes. Carers passing an open door will always converse with residents and nothing is too much trouble. Fresh flowers appear in rooms and pet dogs accompany some staff making a welcome visit to the residents. Even lambs visited early in the years! Good food, good homely care and when a parent says "I like it here" and they do 'look after my mum so well - it is the right place' you know they are happy and content.
Our aunt is extremely happy in Portcullis Care Home
Mother-in-law has been at Portcullis House for a few years. Excellent management and running of the home. All staff really lovely. We are kept informed of Mother-in-law's health with frequent emails. It has been hard during the pandemic but we are just glad she is at Portcullis being kept safe and well. More importantly, loved. Thanks to all the staff.
Very good staff. Needs more fresh air let in! Not much info given as to activities that my husband does? Need to know more about how he is and what he does all day?
Putting a loved one into a care home can be very traumatic, especially when they are unable to communicate themselves. However, the staff at Portcullis supported us and gave us confidence that Dad was going to be well cared for and happy. We are so pleased that he has settled well and is obviously being helped during a difficult time for all of us. They have been excellent communicators, friendly, professional and kind.
The care given to my mother was excellent. The carers were always kind and considerate to my mother and her visiting relatives. Whenever she was ill or needed medical assistance, they were always quick to respond. She was always happy and contented with every aspect of the home, enjoyed any days out that were organised and treats provided in house. Thank you.
Mum has stayed at Portcullis House for the last 7 months. I am so pleased she is here. Mum is very happy and has nothing but praise for the lovely staff. It has been a very hard time for everyone. We can only thank all the staff for the care and attention they give.
My mother has been a resident at Portcullis House for a number of years now and as a family, we are extremely pleased with the level of care and support she receives and even more so in the last year (2020) as due to national lockdowns we were not able to visit and be part of her life as much as we would wish. The staff make me feel most welcome and are very accommodating if I need to talk about any concerns or need any advice etc. As for my mother, she’s always smiling and happy when we visit and is very contented and happy with all the members of staff that interact with her. Portcullis House staff have become an extended part of our family life and we highly recommend and value the team.
Portcullis House is a care home with a capital C in care. My mum is looked after with the most care and understanding that l could possibly wish for. As soon as you walk through the door you can feel the warmth from everyone who works there. There is nothing they won't do to make my mum's stay a pleasure. I receive regular updates on how's she's doing and if l need a chat there is always a friendly voice on the other end of the phone. Can't fault the home at all we were so lucky to find a room when she needed one.
