View Full Details of Westerlands Care HomeA friendly, warm environment with a good atmosphere. Great, efficient staff who portray a genuine warmth towards all the residents. Lots of good and varied activities where all residents are included. More than happy with the care being received by our mother.
My mum's only been here a few weeks but the transformation is apparent to everyone. In her previous place (a cottage hospital) she was far more confused, afraid and constantly needed reassurance. In no time at all she has settled here and actually seems to be enjoying what time she has left. She loves the visits by support animals and the occasional outings, and feels safe because the staff are so quick at responding when she needs help during the night. The level of care is excellent, as is the food, and because there are only a small number of residents and the staff are permanent there's a real relationship between the carers and the inhabitants. Best of all the whole place is run as a not-for-profit. I am sorry that there are so few places like this in Scotland, so much of the care industry seems to be about generating wealth, often in places where the facilities look great, but the actual care is impersonal. I'm so glad we found this place for Mum to call home.
My husband has been living in Westerlands since May 2024. It feels like a home and the staff are all kind and considerate. They have a good entertainment program for the residents. In the summer, you can sit out in the garden. The chef makes lovely food.
Our mum has been under the care of Westerlands for almost 7 years and I cannot praise the staff highly enough. They have always placed the needs of their residents first, particularly through the COVID years, and they have consistently provided a warm, caring and welcoming home for our Mum treating her with dignity and genuine respect. We have always been kept fully updated on all aspects of our Mum's care and needs, even more so in the last few months as she starts to face a gradual decline. There has never been a time where our family has had any doubts or concerns about the level of care our Mum is receiving. The carers are all genuine and friendly and it is not just our Mum but all the residents who respond positively to the staff looking after them. Families are welcomed into Westerlands and often join in the excellent and varied activities provided. Our mum is very content and at peace.
Our Dad has lived at Westerlands for several years now and he always seems so happy, content and at home there. Being a smaller home, Westerlands is very homely and all the staff are so friendly and helpful and you get to know everyone so quickly. The home is well run: care is carried out to a very high standard, food is fantastic and the activities on offer are amazing. Recently, the home has bought a Virtual Reality headset, aimed specifically at elderly people and people with dementia, and this seems to have gone down very well with all the residents. Our Dad has been really enjoying watching football on the large projector screen with the other men and he enjoys the regular entertainment program. There is no better place for our Dad to be, he is so well looked after - thank you Westerlands.
Westerlands is a great place, so friendly, you are treated like you are one of the family and I could not wish for better care for my sister. The meals are very good and they get a great variety of food and choices, then you have the entertainment, it is brilliant for the residents and I must admit I like it myself as we are all very much entertained and they always have a buffet on which is always lovely and tasty, they should get every award that there is to get, love them all.
Westerlands is a lovely place. The minute you step inside you can feel the homely, friendly atmosphere. The staff are so genuinely kind and caring and attentive to my mum's needs. Also, the management are hands-on, very friendly and approachable. It feels like a big family with everyone pulling together to provide the best care for each and every resident. Also, as there isn't any agency staff, continuity of care is excellent with all staff being aware of all residents' needs. Meals are healthy and homecooked, my mum eats the lot! There are activities daily and lots of events organised throughout the year, thanks to the hardworking activity coordinator. I feel so lucky my mum is in Westerlands. Couldn't ask for better care.
My father has been in Westerlands for approaching two years now and from day one our family has had great confidence in the support provided. All the staff are friendly, approachable and caring and they always treat Dad with respect. They know him and his little ways intimately. This is a really homely care facility, not a clinical institution. The rooms and common areas are kept very clean and the food is excellent with fresh ingredients cooked on-site. After a hospital visit which left my father on blended foods, the wonderful cook tempted him, slowly but surely, back to a normal diet. Communication is very good. Phone calls are answered quickly and dealt with efficiently and office staff are also prompt to ring relatives whenever necessary. In addition there is now a social media group which keeps us brilliantly informed of all the many and varied events and activities that are happening. Residents have a great social life with plenty of individual and group opportunities.
This is an excellent care home which has a very human approach to care, rather than corporate, which is why we chose Westerlands for our family member’s care. The staff are always friendly and welcoming to visitors, both in person and over the phone. The atmosphere in the home is very pleasant, or inspiring if you happen to arrive when there are activities taking place. It is so nice to see the impact of the activities on people’s faces and it brings a real feel-good atmosphere to everyone. The food is homemade which is a real bonus and my mum always looks well nourished. Clothes are washed each day, and so she always looks fresh and well cared for which is a real boost when you walk in. I feel well informed about my mum’s care and know that I can trust that staff will be in touch if they have any concerns, which they have had to do. We have a very healthy and open relationship and I can’t thank them enough for all they do.
My relative moved into Westerlands in the summer and we have been extremely pleased with how well he has been supported. It was a difficult time for him coming from a home, where he had stayed for many years, which was closing. The staff are all very friendly and welcoming and subsequently, there is a lovely feel to the home. We have been absolutely in awe at the level and variety of activities that the home run. This includes singers, summer fayres, games, quizzes, and pet therapy. Really the list is endless. Their ability to support residents as individuals is so impressive and although my relative no longer feels able to go on trips seeing others go out and enjoy afternoon tea with ponies or the football or just visiting a shop is just brilliant. They support folk to live their lives.
What a wonderful place and team of caring people. Can’t praise it enough. They deserve this award and more. Good luck girls. Our brother is so well looked after. They take him walking most days as he was a keen hillwalker. Nothing is too much effort for them.
Westerlands really is a gem of a care home. It provides very individual care and support to all its residents and because it is reasonably small the residents are all made to feel as if they matter. The activities and atmosphere created in this home are really very special and this is because staff genuinely seem to enjoy their jobs. My dad has been here for 6 years and I cannot fault how he is looked after, it makes my life feel so much better too, thank you.
The love, support and care shown to my mum ever since she arrived at Westerlands, over a year ago, has been outstanding. My mum thrived in the home-from-home friendly environment. She has joined in the many and varied activities as she is a very sociable lady. All the staff demonstrate sensitivity, patience and care to all the residents this is always evident during my regular visits. I am always made welcome and kept up to date with my mum's care and daily living. Any requests I make are always responded to promptly. My mum is treated with dignity and respect at all times. I have been so grateful for this recently when my mum's health deteriorated the staff and the caring leadership of management could not have been more helpful and supportive. The care and support shown to my mum, myself and the family has meant more than words can say. I am so grateful that she lives at Westerlands I have peace of mind knowing she is cared for in such a caring, loving, homely, beautiful environment.
No praise high enough for the love, support, care and attention our mother received from what became her second family at Westerlands. From the time she arrived, she felt like she was in a five-star hotel and couldn't believe her luck that she could be waited on hand and foot, as needed, as long as she lived. She loved: - the delicious, freshly cooked, solid Scottish fare, - her freshly decorated room, - the lovely, open, spacious garden and driveway, - the magnificence of the old building with all of its unique features, no two rooms the same, - the sensitivity, patience, care and attention of every member of the hand-picked staff - the ongoing accessibility, caring, leadership and involvement of the manager himself, and his duty managers, with residents, family and staff. As a family, we felt nothing but gratitude and relief for the welcome and support we always received as part of her team, as well as knowing our calls, requests or input would all be answered and responded to promptly.
My mum sadly passed away in Westerlands on the 8th of January 2021. She was in the care home for 4-years and me and my family couldn't praise all the staff enough for the care that they gave my mum. They phoned us every time something was wrong with mum, nothing was ever a problem for them. I would recommend this care home to everyone; they are a credit to Westerlands and to themselves. When this covid is over, myself and my family will be looking forward to going to the summer and Christmas fairs, and to see all the staff again. So I would like to thank all staff including the manager. A massive thank you from the bottom of our hearts; you will always be in our hearts.
My Gran moved into Westerlands after six months of being in hospital/temp care. My wife and I went to visit her at the start of December, a week after she moved in. We thought the home was beautiful and the staff were extremely friendly. My Gran is now eating full meals, putting on weight, gets her hair done weekly, and now has hearing aids that work, doing activities and generally happier in herself. I genuinely think Westerlands has given my Gran a new lease of life. She is 92, and hopefully, she will now comfortably see the big 100! The home itself is warm, clean and most importantly, homely. The staff are simply wonderful. When I am older and in need of care, I would be delighted to see out my life in this beautiful home. Thanks to all the wonderful staff for looking after my Gran.
When our mother was forced to give up independent living at the age of 92, we were all very concerned about finding somewhere which could provide a new, welcoming home for her. Still fully mentally sharp and alert, it was a somewhat traumatic experience for her to leave the family home and enter a new era of life. Luckily, she found a place at Westerlands Care Home, and all of our initial worries and concerns have been completely allayed. Our mother has truly found a new home where she feels safe and cared for 24/7. The staff are all incredibly kind and caring, and the atmosphere is welcoming and inclusive. Immediately on her arrival, Westerlands began to take care of many issues which had become neglected over the previous months as mum had become less able to cope at home. She was seen by an optician, a chiropodist, the hearing aid centre, etc and after a few weeks, she really blossomed looking so much better than before. We really cannot recommend Westerlands highly enough.
Everyone was so kind to us, they were so friendly and helpful and they made us so welcome.
From the minute we viewed Westerlands Care Home my friend knew this was the place she would like to live. From the management to the staff team, her care was outstanding. The residents were treated with dignity and respect. As I have said Westerlands gave my friend outstanding care and I cannot thank them enough. They were always friendly and approachable.
My mother was 89 when she chose to move to Westerlands. She visited and immediately felt welcome and decided this was the place for her. Prior to moving in she had a small stroke which limited her vision and mobility. The initial care and attention she got from the staff was outstanding, as my mother's health deteriorated and she was bedridden that care and attention only increased. I cannot praise highly enough the commitment and care that all the staff gave my mother. The welcome we received from the staff on each visit, including the cup of tea, made us feel like part of their big family. For my mothers last two weeks one of the family was with her 24/7. We were well looked after and received meals there. When my mother passed away there was a quiet efficiency, care and compassion in making arrangements including members of staff attended my mothers funeral. I can only offer my highest recommendation and thanks from my family for the care you gave our mother. Thank you.
