View Full Details of Houndswood House Care HomeUnfortunately the standards of this previously well regarded nursing home have declined. Recently sold to a Radlett businessman, subsequent cuts resulted in activities being stopped altogether and a lack of staff at crucial times of the day. My wife and other residents were often left on their own in the main lounge and she felt abandoned and alone. Many of the new staff brought in after complaints were non-verbal as far as residents were concerned and she was even put to bed by an elderly Spanish man who usually served the tea. Although she made physical improvements my wife had falls, went to sleep un-noticed on a sofa in the lounge, was often left in her pyjamas all day and her main activity was sitting in a chair. As a family we were forced to move my wife after being there for two months and have found a far better place at about the same cost where she receives friendly and supportive care. I would definitely warn people off going to Houndswood House these days.
Staff at Houndswood House Care Home were very caring and considerate during the time my father was in their care. He was on first name basis with staff and was very fond of all, especially those involved with his specific needs. The care home is a lovely place, almost stately. My dad will have had many happy days here before his sad passing.
My mother is very happy at Houndswood House. The house and surroundings are very pleasant. The staff listen to residents and relatives and try and give residents what they want. There is generally a happy atmosphere in the home. Residents are given a choice of meals and the food is very good.
My mother has been a resident in Houndswood Hosue since the end of July 2024 and I am so very pleased with every aspect of the care she receives. The building, the carers, the nurses, the atmosphere, the cleanliness, the management and absolutely everything about the home is first class.
My wife has been a resident of Houndswood House for four and a half years. I have always felt assured that she was being looked after in a caring, professional and friendly manner. As a visitor on a regular basis, I have always felt welcomed into and family environment.
My sister was only with you for nine weeks prior to her death. The end-of-life palliative care she received was excellent. All the staff were kind, considerate and understanding both to my sister and all the family. We stayed 24/7, days before her death. We had a room provided for resting, washing facilities and food and drink were made available. We have returned several times for various reasons and have been welcomed by everyone. The staff have been like a family, including management.
My family and I are most grateful to this lovely, caring home. My wife fell ill abroad and on returning to the UK was unable to feed or leave her bed. Since going in this home three months ago, she has made wonderful progress and is very happy there. Thanks to all the staff.
We liked Houndswood House as soon as we walked in. It’s extremely well-kept and has a lovely homely atmosphere. My mum came from hospital, two months after a terrible seizure, which left her mentally and physically disabled. Her Alzheimer’s has sadly advanced to the point where she needs 24-hour care but physically she’s doing great. After a few months at Houndswood, she’s walking, absolutely loves the food and the catheter is gone! My family and I know that her determination to ‘walk about’ has been challenging but all the staff and management have continued to find ways of supporting her and we are very grateful for this. They are always so kind, caring and patient and my mum is really fond of them. There is a lovely rapport between staff and residents at Houndswood House with lots of smiles and chat. The staff work really hard to keep everyone happy and well cared for. I think they do an excellent job!
My father initially entered the home for respite care but quickly decided he wanted to stay permanently as he felt well cared for. Sadly his health deteriorated and eventually, he died but from a family perspective, we were delighted with the way his final days were made comfortable by the staff.
My mother has been a resident at Houndswood House since July this year. Sadly Mum was bedbound. The staff did everything they could to make her comfortable and she was looked after with wonderful care. Mum passed away this week. The care she received in the last few days was so kind, respectful and dignified. The staff couldn't have done more for her and looked after her and all of us too.
My mother entered Houndswood House directly from having been in hospital on end-of-life care. Mum hung on for another 6 weeks or so and I know the care given to her by all the caring members of staff no doubt prolonged her life and I have great comfort in that my mother could not have had a more caring and comfortable end of life anywhere else. Heartfelt gratitude to all at Houndswood.
My auntie was admitted to Houndswood House on the 9th of July, and during her time spent there, she was well looked after. On my visits, which were fortnightly, she was never agitated and always looked content and happy. Sadly, during July 23, she became unwell. After a short time in the hospital, she returned to the care home for one week, at which point, on the 1st of August, she sadly passed away but with good care offered in her final days.
My dad has been a resident in the home since the end of August 2022, converting from a respite stay to permanent and currently he seems happy and settled. The new management team and staff are caring, friendly and approachable and we feel relieved that he is in safe hands and being cared for with dignity. The activities staff have also made a huge positive difference since they have been in the role, getting my dad out of his room more and generally bringing a lot of enthusiasm and energy to the home.
The staff made the transition from respite into full-time care so easy. Was worried about my grandad going into full-time care as it was getting too much emotionally for the family but everyone is extremely friendly and kind. There is no feeling of being unwanted there and visiting hours are so flexible, it makes you feel like you're visiting his home. Could not wish for a nicer place and it is so easy to get to feel very reassured that my grandad is being looked after and cared for.
After a couple of respite stays my Dad decided to make it permanent. He was very comfortable here and felt well looked after. This is a home that cares. The staff are friendly and the place is spotless. The activities team works hard to be inclusive of all who want to take part and room visits for those who prefer a little time to themselves. The team are always finding new activities that are fun and interesting. A well-led managed makes it all run like clockwork, with a smile.

The activities team are brilliant - fresh and energetic - they work so hard to make sure everyone is engaged - the Kings Coronation and the Eurovision Song events were big celebrations and were great fun for all involved.
