View Full Details of Oakdene Care HomeMy Mum was in Acorn Lodge this home from August 22 until April 24. There were insufficient staff for the number of residents. The lifts were out of action for many months during this time. Many of the staff are recruited from overseas and tied into long contracts that includes accommodation within the premises. If staff themselves complain, they are told they no longer have a room, thus they leave on their own volition. Sometimes failed to provide time critical meds on time. Covered up when there was an outbreak out of scabies. Staff not given sufficient time for each resident so record keeping done after the event. When I asked to see the records for my Mum relating to many unwitnessed falls, I was told they had been archived by the previous manager. Personal items went missing. There were 3 changes of management in short succession. Care fees went up by a ridiculous amount and higher than advertised. Difficult to find a member of staff to let you out of the building.
My mum has been at Oakdene Care Home for short-term respite for the last few weeks. The care she has received has been brilliant and the staff have constantly gone out of their way to ensure she is happy and safe. Her dignity has been a priority for the staff which we've been so relieved to see on a regular basis. The food is wonderful too!
My dad has only been here for 10 days but everyone has been very kind, friendly and helpful and he has settled well and feels safe and well looked after. Thank you.
My husband has only been here for two weeks, but so far, I am happy with his care. He needs plenty of activities to keep him stimulated, and two particular members of staff are very good at providing these.
Mum has been in Oakdene for just over two years. The strength of the home is definitely in the day-to-day care and dedication of all the staff, who always have Mum’s well-being at heart. We have recently appreciated the time spent with senior staff discussing Mum’s complex needs. We know she is being well looked after, which is so reassuring.
My mum has been at Oakdene since May 2022, she has Alzheimer's, and we have experienced two other homes that were unable to meet her needs. To see Mum content and settled is very comforting and reassuring for me. The staff are wonderful, and all residents are treated with respect and, importantly, love! Mum's individual needs are well catered for, and the home has a family feel to it. She enjoys time with the other residents and the food and entertainment provided. We have enjoyed some of the events Oakdene have put on for families to enjoy too. Barbeques in the Summer and Christmas tree decorating to name a couple; it's nice to feel included and to get to know other residents' families too. All bedrooms are ensuite and newly decorated. The shared lounge is light and airy, with access to the enclosed garden for a sit in the sun and wander. I would recommend Oakdene to anyone considering residential care for a loved one.
My father is in respite care at Oakdene and has been treated with the utmost respect and warmth with a lovely carefree approach leading to an extended stay and a happy Dad. This comes on the back of numerous other homes letting the care community down with poor quality care. Keep up the good work, and thank you.
The staff have been very helpful to me in helping my sister settle in. She is very happy at Oakdene, and she has settled in well and finds everyone very helpful. It is a lovely home and has lovely staff. She has had her hair done twice and also her feet. My sister has only been there a couple of weeks. Thank you so much.
We contacted Oakdene after Mum had a couple of falls following a stroke as she could not cope continuing to live on her own. From the initial phone call through initial assessment (by my brother and daughter as we were in quarantine) through to her arrival we were kept informed and reassured. Mum has been there for 7 weeks now and all of the staff are lovely and are always available (either in person or by email) to answer queries. We have got to know a number of staff and they are always willing to chat to us and Mum whenever we visit. The room is comfortable with a nice garden view and the en-suite bathroom makes life easy. We feel comfortable knowing that Mum is in a safe environment and being looked after at all times.
My mother received excellent care in this small, homely care home and was very happy during the two years that she lived there. This gave me confidence for my sister to go there, initially for short term respite care. The personalised care that my sister received from the team of professional caring staff, during this period of respite care, has considerably improved her mental and physical health, making her a much happier and sociable person.
My introduction to Oakdene Care Home was rather sudden, after my mother had a stroke and we, the family, were unable to provide the constant care she required. I visited to look at a spare room, and the manager came to visit my mother for an assessment, and we decided on an initial 2 week respite package. I was immediately impressed by the thoughtfulness and compassion shown during quite a hard time. We dropped my mother off, frail at this point, and were worried about how she would get on, and within a week her condition was much improved. Since then, almost two months later, she has continued to improve, is eating well, gradually gaining strength, and while not wanting to leave her room much, is much healthier and in a better frame of mind. This, I am sure, is down to the quality of care; the staff are genuinely lovely, caring, thoughtful, and happy to help. Oakdene is a lovely home, and I don't think we could have found a better place for Mum.
Having reached crisis point with my 95-year-old mother who has Alzheimer's we contacted Oakdene Care Home to enquire about an initial period of respite. We spoke with the Deputy Manager who was compasionate and understanding about our situation. She lead us through the admission proceedure advising about testing and all other aspects of respite care. She responded quickly by both phone and e-mail and was very supportive during a very emotional and difficult time. When we arrived we were met by a lovely carer who immediately made my mother feel welcome. The en suite room we were given was roomy with plenty of storage and an adapted bathroom and a lovely garden view, perfect for her needs. Acorn Lodge was very clean and all the staff we encountered were engaging and kind. We were encouraged to take familiar items for her room which made the arrival easier. My Mother has now become a permanent resident on each visit the staff are engaging and kind, treating the residents as individuals.
My aunt moved to Acorn Lodge in January 2022, firstly for respite but is now a permanent resident. From my first enquiry, I have been nothing but impressed by the politeness, helpfulness and empathy shown to myself, my aunt and my uncle. Acorn Lodge is a lovely environment-clean, light, airy yet homely. The staff are friendly, kind and more than willing to help with any questions or worries. Covid restrictions are slowly easing and everyone does their best to work around them to ensure the residents are safe but still accessible to family and visitors. There is always something going on at the home to entertain the residents, tea parties, visiting entertainers, crafts, quizzes, the list goes on. My uncle and I really don't think we could have found a better home for my aunt to be cared for once we were no longer able to meet her growing needs.
We chose Oakdene for some respite care for my Dad who has Alzheimers Disease. From the initial point of contact through to admission, the team were responsive, caring and very flexible. During his stay, the care my Dad has received has been of a high standard, with good communication at regular intervals. Despite the Covid restrictions, we are able to visit him and take him out for walks. The home is warm and friendly, spotlessly clean and very calm, even when the staff are very busy. It has given us great comfort to know Dad is cared for and looked after here.
My mother (and father) went into Acorn Lodge in 2017. We have always been very satisfied with the level of care provided by Oakdene staff and facilities. It's a shame they haven't been rewarded for all their dedication, as this is now apparent by the current high turnover of staff. I don't understand this, as the weekly care home fees are very high and increase each year are 10% or more.
Although my mother was only in Acorn Lodge for just under two weeks before she passed away, the staff did everything they could for her. We were kept well informed of any issues with her medical needs. I cannot speak highly enough of the staff, unfortunately, I did not have all their names, a special thanks to the lead carers in the Acorn Lodge. I have put satisfactory for Activities as my mother didn't have a chance to use them (this was due to the mandatory 14-day lockdown isolation due to Covid).
The care from the staff is both loving and thorough, making my mother happy to reside at Acorn Lodge (Oakdene Care Home). The manager has stepped up to the role very well and her leadership style is both professional and empathetic and a big improvement over her predecessor's. However, since the care home has fallen from a private care home into a large corporate organisation, the true signs of greed surface every year. Double-digit price increases without any justification, to now £1,400 per week is really taking the ...., especially when the staff are on virtually the minimum wage. This is a disgrace and the shareholders should take a long hard look at themselves in the mirror!
During the pandemic, keeping up to date about my mum's health and wellbeing has been challenging. Thankfully whether by email or telephone the efforts of both the care staff and the admin staff have ensured that a week does not go by without a message of some sort or other to let me know how she is and that she is safe and well.
Although sadly, mum was only in Acorn Lodge for three weeks until she passed away, the care she was given and the support the family had from the staff was amazing. Obviously, due to the pandemic, contact with mum was restricted, but in her last few days, the staff did everything to make sure we were able to be with her whenever we wanted. We cannot thank them enough for their kindness.
My Mother has resided in Oakdene Care Home for several years now and like everyone with a loved one in a Care Home it has been a very difficult time during the past year, however, I am so thankful that my Mother has been and is under the care of their amazing staff and management. I will never forget that they all put themselves on the front line to continue the professional and loving care given to all the residents under such an extreme situation. The staff are always friendly, welcoming and someone is always available to help when I call which has been very important during this time. If I've ever needed to be informed about something regarding my Mother's care, I have always been contacted immediately, which is really important for my peace of mind. During the time I haven't been able to visit it's been a comfort to know how much all the staff really care and have done so many extra things to help with my Mother's well being.
