View Full Details of Southlands Care HomeI cannot give an opinion regarding value for money because I have no knowledge of other care homes. This was my first experience and overall a good one! I question the degree of cleanliness because I had to ask for some disposable pants to be removed after 3 days from the container in the wet room. My bed was not made until late in the day - I came back from lunch to find it still unmade. Because I was not well on some days, I found it disagreeable to look at an unmade bed. Eventually I made it myself until an assistant (man) took pity on me and did it for me. One day (first week) I was not given any lunch - second week 2 days without lunch or afternoon tea, following which I searched for staff to make sure I had lunch.
Southlands Care Home is an oasis of comfort and offers a pleasant and spacious environment to its residents and their visitors. It is tastefully decorated and comfortably furnished giving residents a choice of joining in the fun in the ballroom, meeting their visitors in either of two smaller sitting rooms or, weather permitting, taking a walk in the well-tended garden. The staff are second to none. Patient, cheerful and empathetic, they deliver whatever is needed with expertise and above all kindness and respect. The atmosphere is one of warmth and inclusion. The residents are at ease and free to participate or not in the many and varied activities on offer, from tai chi to quizzes, singalongs to Zumba, horseracing, to burns night. These are just a few of the numerous pass times on offer every day of the week to keep our brains alert and bodies moving. There is always something to celebrate at Southlands. Any excuse to bring out the bunting. On entering the dining room, with fresh flowers on every table, you would be forgiven for thinking that you were having a well-earned holiday in a five star hotel.
It is particularly important for me to have confidence in the home looking after my father as I live in Australia. Southlands Care Home provides that confidence. The staff are particularly good and notify me by email of any changes in my 93-year-old father's condition/situation. I have just visted and my father is comfortable and well looked after. The staff are good-humoured, despite a difficult job and are always welcoming.
On 11th December 2024 I had the pleasure of attending a Christmas lunch hosted for the residents, their family and friends at Southlands Care Home. I attended as a friend of one of the residents, and it appeared that all present had a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon. A happy and warm atmosphere prevailed, and we were treated with the utmost respect by both staff and management as they ensured that all present at the lunch had a thoroughly enjoyable experience, as indeed we did. The meal was very good and the service we received was courteous and professionally delivered, The musical activity provided after the meal was delightful. All in all, it was a very enjoyable experience and I regard myself as fortunate to have been able to attend. Thank you.
On entering Southlands Care Home there is always a welcoming atmosphere, especially from the second in command and the three part-time receptionists. Their professional approach makes for a relaxing experience. If we have any worries we tell them and they are normally sorted. The rooms are adequate and well kept through a team of excellent cleaners, the laundry is also well laundered. Meals are varied and well presented, coffee time is enjoyable and the main barrister is always cheerful. The staff are conscientious.
Having not had any previous dealing with care home, I would say that the first impressions are quite good. The staff are very attentive and show a keen and caring attitude. Management are always on the ball in making sure everything is done to a high standard and make sure everyone is their number one priority. All facilities and cleanliness are of a high standard and activities are varied. Overall I would say my mother is well cared for in a safe environment.
Southlands has lots of varied activities going on every day and residents are encouraged to participate. All the staff are extremely friendly and helpful and nothing is too much trouble. The front-of-house staff give a very warm welcome when you come in which gives you a very positive feeling that your loved ones are in safe hands.
My brother has been a resident at Southlands for just under a year now. All the staff are very helpful and knowledgeable and will go the extra mile for the residents. The front of house staff are exceedingly welcoming and helpful which gives a very good impression when you walk in. There is something going on for the residents on most days and they are encouraged to join in.
We are thrilled with Southlands as a care home. Mum and Dad are treated with such dignity and kindness. The manager is so kind and always goes above and beyond to take care of and interact with the residents. The bedrooms are beautiful, warm and cosy. They are personalised with sentimental items from home. we live in America so it is very reassuring to see Mum and Dad so safe and cared for. Thank you all so much, you are immensely appreciated. I wish I could remember the names of all the staff members! Everyone is wonderful!
Please don't be upset about the 'good' columns - the experience was fine and pretty well did what we required and what it said on the tin. The difference between good and excellent were very small details indeed. The most striking thing of all was the conscientiousness and patience of all the staff to everyone there, however severe their disabilities. All were addressed with dignity and by name. The medical staff were totally on the ball with my own needs. There is bound to be an element of institutionalism with so many mouths to feed all at once. A great advert for Bupa generally.
The staff are outstanding in their attention to residents and visitors alike. The nursing staff are caring and alert to any problems and seem to have a respectful relationship with the NHS. I have less experience of the social aspects here, but it seems to me that the effort to get the residents to engage in activities comes across as empathetic and creative. There are obvious downsides, in particular the length of time taken for the lift replacement as acknowledged in the recent newsletter, but this is I understand due to unexpected extra work needed and not the fault of the staff here. They are coping admirably with working through the disruption. Also there is increasing difficulty in finding a parking space, sometimes even resulting in the thoughtless occupation of the ambulance bay. Maybe if lines were painted in the top park, an extra couple of vehicles could be accommodated? My partner has very limited speech after a major stroke, and ultimately I feel he is safe in Southlands.
Once mother had settled in the home she really appreciated the tender loving care she received from everyone. She would have liked it if staff could have come sooner when she needed the toilet! This is the only care home I enjoyed visiting. The staff were very friendly and made me feel welcome. There was a lovely well-kept garden where we could take her in the wheelchair.
My brother came to Southlands earlier this year after varying health issues which left him unable to live independently. I found from the day I came to view the home for him that it had a warm and friendly atmosphere and the staff seemed happy in their work. The communal areas are varied and well-used by the residents with daily activities which many love to participate in and the garden is a well-kept and welcoming area. The dining rooms are light, airy and easily accessible and the menu goes above and beyond to suit all tastes, my brother is now eating a varied and healthy diet and really enjoying meal times. The staff are always on hand to answer any query and provide an excellent family atmosphere whilst carrying out the care with the utmost professionalism. My brother has adapted well and feels safe and well cared for due to all at Southlands, a big thank you and long may this continue.
I had a short stay at Southlands following hip replacement surgery. Help with mobility, medication, dressing removal and general wellness were available. This provided excellent and essential support following the hospital duration, enhancing the recovery process. Something to bear in mind for the future should the need arise. I have been left with pleasant memories alongside thoughts of dreading the operation.
My dad was in Southlands for ten months before he died. I was incredibly impressed by the professionalism, compassion and care he received every day from a wonderful team of people. My family and I visited very regularly, several times a week at all times of the day. We never once had cause for concern or saw him treated with anything other than kindness and patience. It is clear that Southlands has strong leadership and a high level of morale amongst staff. Nothing was ever too much trouble for them. The environment is warm, friendly and calm with access to a lovely garden and daily activities. It felt like a very tranquil place in a hectic world. No one really wants their loved one to go into care and we were left with no other option due to his various health issues and declining cognitive ability. We are so glad we chose Southlands for the final phase of his life. We’ll miss him greatly and strangely we’ll also miss Southlands and its team.
My mother was a resident for over 2 years up to her recent death. Southlands proved to be the perfect place for the latter stages of her life. My mum was fantastically cared for by all of the staff, she felt safe, nurtured and loved by so many at Southlands. As her health deteriorated the sensitivity of and level of care which she experienced from those looking after her at Southlands was exceptional. Several members of staff went way above the call of duty to look after her and to ensure she was comfortable. Our whole family feel nothing but gratitude to everyone at Southlands for caring for my mother.
Mum had been a resident for over two and half years until she recently passed away. She was settled, in safe hands and was very happy to be there. The care she had was second to none, very attentive, and always very caring to all the nursing staff and other carers. There is always plenty of different activities organised for residents and Mum did take part in many and enjoyed them. The home was always a pleasant, bright clean and friendly place to visit. All the staff are welcoming and willing to help and will go the extra mile if necessary. The garden too is always kept in good condition and is a great area to spend time in. We have recommended Southlands without hesitation to other people.
My dad had been at Southlands Care Home for two years before he passed away peacefully on 29th January this year. I wanted to post a review of his memory, as I know how happy he was during his stay there. If you are looking for somewhere to place a loved one, you couldn’t choose a better place than Southlands. I found the staff there were kind, gentle and caring, and nothing was ever too much trouble; they treated Dad like an extended member of their family. In the two years, Dad was in the care of Southlands, I never felt anxious or worried about him, as I knew he was in good hands. I can honestly say I did not feel this way when Dad was in his previous care home. Big thank you to all of the team who are brilliant and do a very difficult job.
My mother went to Southlands for respite care after a bad fall and head injury. Southlands had been recommended to me by a care professional. From my first visit to look around the team were lovely and found my mother a room at very short notice. My mother was able to recover in very pleasant surroundings with excellent support and kindness from the nurses, carers, housekeeping staff and the management team. She was able to return home after recovering and we are very grateful to all at Southlands who helped us.
So, Mum was in Southlands from 2019 till her recent death, we had the struggle of her settling, Covid, you name it. But, myself and my brother can not praise Southlands staff enough, every one of them. It's been a hard 4 years, but the care and love shown to Mum was above and beyond, the communication between them and family was perfect. When we called to collect Mum's belongings, I was met with hugs and tears. It's not just their job, they are truly invested. Thank you Southlands, all the nurses, all the carers. Thank you.
