View Full Details of The OaksMy mother has been in The Oaks for two and a half years and it used to be a fantastic home. This year 2024, the staff have left in droves and staffing numbers have been cut so much that weekend cover is not acceptable. There is often agency staff on a weekend that do not know the needs or even the names of the residents. Staff on a weekend are run ragged. Both of the ladies who did activities have left, residents are now spending day after day just sat in front of the TV with no interaction at all. My mother has declined as she has nothing to stimulate her. If I ask what the activity is that day, I am told that there isn't any, just the TV. The carers are fantastic. They work extremely hard and really do care about the residents but the management need to have a close look at how they are treating their excellent staff before any more leave and the residents suffer further.
My dad has been in The Oaks for two years having been a bungalow resident from the beginning. He has a comfortable room, with recently refurbished ensuite facilities. He has his own furniture and furnishings with makes it feel like home. He receives excellent, respectful and considerate care from the hardworking, dedicated care staff whose workload only seems to increase. The facilities are good with activities for all the residents who wish to join in. Residents are able to access a small shop, hairdressers, health activity centre, library, workshop and coffee shop to meet up with the wider Hartrigg Oak community.
My mother has been a resident in The Oaks for 18 months. It is evident that the current management team are determined to make changes to improve the quality of the lives of residents and where and when possible consider individual needs. THe permanent care staff do treat Mum with dignity and this caring sensitive approach comes across and makes her feel cared for. They have a very demanding skilled job working with residents and relative and we very much appreciate all they do, often in difficult situations. I hope Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust do everything they can to retain sich quality of staff so they too are cared in the way they care for Mum.
I would like to say thank you to The Oaks. The care provided to my mother in the last year of her life was fantastic. The staff at The Oaks are professional, warm, friendly and made my mother feel most welcome. During my mother's last few days, the whole family were supported with love and attention to detail. Thank you.
My mum has been at The Oaks for a month now and we could not be happier. She has settled in quickly and all the staff are incredibly kind and patient with her. She enjoys the meals, and there is a fantastic program of activities every day, which she enjoys joining in with. Her room is lovely, a good size, and always immaculately clean. The grounds are also beautiful and we often enjoy a walk round the gardens or tea in the coffee shop. We feel extremely grateful that Mum is now living in such a lovely place and it has brought us great peace of mind to know she is being so well cared for and looked after. An absolute top-class example of a brilliant care home. Thank you.
I have nothing but praise for every aspect of The Oaks. My mother has been here for 8 months now and she continues to tell me how lucky she feels to be there. The staff are incredibly caring and patient with her, which is especially important for us as she has very high anxiety and a failing memory. The staff are extremely attentive to her needs and do everything they can to make her feel comfortable and safe, but without patronising or infantilising her. Her room and ensuite are very comfortable and always immaculate. She has her own balcony and looks out over beautifully maintained gardens. There is a wide variety of activities on offer which she is always invited but never forced to join in with.
My mother is staying in the Oaks for a period of respite care after a short stay in the hospital - her second visit in the past year. Since the moment she arrived, she has been made to feel safe, loved, listened to and cared for - and assured that she can stay for as long as it takes. Knowing that she can recover at her own pace and will be fully supported back into her own bungalow when the time comes gives her great peace of mind. Me too. I have spent a lot of time in the Oaks during my mother’s stay and have been struck and humbled pretty much daily by the dedication of the staff, from management to nurses to carers. What has also helped me, in particular, is being able to have a close dialogue with staff and management over my mother’s situation.
Three of my relatives have lived in the Oaks over the years. My mother is currently living there. She and I are very happy with her care. The management is excellent, and the carers are outstanding professional compassionate people. The integration of the Oaks within the wider retirement community of Hartrigg Oaks is a big plus, with shared facilities like a gym and restaurants, and many activities and services to take part in. My mother maintains great social contact within the community. Definitely recommended.
This care home cannot be faulted. Even during/after Covid, the staff have worked continuously to provide a caring, loving and dignified experience. I would recommend Joseph Rowntree Housing Trus to anyone!
Excellent facility.
I moved into The Oaks in June 2017. My mother had been here for nearly 9 years and so I was confident that it was a happy, caring home where residents were secure. The Oaks is set in well maintained grounds edged by a small stream with a Rose Garden, exclusively for the use of The Oaks. A variety of activities are arranged including singing, music-making and armchair exercises. An added attraction is the rest of the community - 152 bungalows with residents over 60 - which also has a large range of activities (including Art, Bridge, concerts, French conversation and singing) and a fully staffed Health Activity Centre available to residents of the Oaks and meals in the restaurant where all food is freshly cooked. During the Covid-19 pandemic, the staff have kept us safe, contact with relatives has been organised and regular visits allowed within government guidelines. The staff are always cheerful, caring and patient. I cannot recommend it highly enough.
Excellent activity facilitation for residents, which was maintained on an individual basis when residents were confined to their rooms during lockdown periods. Only one instance of resident dying with Covid, following outside admission, no transmission. Possibility to join residents from associated bungalows for coffee or meal in restaurants. Aim for integrated living with active residents.
The gold standard of what a retirement home should be. This home is unique - a mixture of active 55+ year olds and time needing more support. (Re The Oaks) A community of 300 people. Many activities and facilities. A pleasure to be here.
