View Full Details of Gwernllwyn Care HomeFrom day one, I felt my dad was in safe hands. When I visited, I hadn’t seen him looking so clean and tidy for a number of years; his hair was cut, his scruffy beard gone, and he looked happy and well-fed. On one occasion, my car had broken down, which made me late for a visit, but the staff made me welcome, placed Dad on a table for two and gave us both a lovely glass of squash, and I sat and watched him devour three courses of a lovely meal - Soup, Quiche and Salad, with all the trimmings and finally scrumptious little eclairs with a cup of tea. Dad, whose demeanour can be challenging, is always jollied out of one of his more cantankerous moods, by staff, leaving him chuckling instead of scowling. How Gwernllwyn manages to recruit such lovely carers is a mystery - of course, they are all very well trained, but the personality has to be right for the job - you can never train a personality into anyone! I am delighted with Gwernllwyn and cannot praise them highly enough.
This review is for October 2022 as my latest visit was in December when the home was closed for visitors so had a quick, disappointing visit through an open window. As always, my October visit was good. I had lunch with my sister and enjoyed an afternoon singing. Most enjoyable! I visited again in the evening which was good for my sister and me. Unfortunately, one thing worried me. A lady resident in the sitting room became more and more distressed calling for help. No one came to help her! I and another resident searched the ground floor for a staff member but found no one. Eventually, someone appeared from the medicine room telling me she had been on the phone with a doctor! What would have happened if the resident had had a fall or fell attempting to get out of her chair? Other than this, I am pleased with the care the staff gives and the feedback to relatives.
First of all, as a daughter, I have been made to feel welcomed, felt supported through some difficult decisions and circumstances and reassured about my mum's well-being at Gwernllwyn. Excellent communication between the manager/dedicated staff and residents and their families and always approachable. I have peace of mind that my mum is happy and content, in a safe place, being well-cared for within a homely set-up amongst some of her own furniture and possessions. Family members are invited to attend entertainment (which Mum and I really enjoyed). First choice was always her own home but unfortunately was not an option... Gwernllwyn was the one and only option for Mum and am most grateful and relieved to have Mum accepted to live there.
My sister has settled well in the home over the last year. My sister has dementia but otherwise is still active. The staff have gone above and beyond to accommodate her needs and desires. She is particularly active and is being encouraged to support and befriend new residents as they settle in. A role she enjoys, and feels empowers her and gives her a sense of purpose, which is very important for her with the challenges associated with dementia. The staff are always helpful, polite and accommodating. Something that is important to me living over 100 miles away - and not able to pop in every day. We (the staff and myself) work together to solve any problems and to identify and find solutions and helps that work for my sister. In that sense, the support is highly customised and bespoke to her needs which is much appreciated by the family.
I highly recommend this wonderful place to anyone. I am over the moon with the quality of care my nan is receiving. As a Healthcare assistant myself, I know the level of care I expect. The home manager has gone above and beyond to help my nan settle in. I am eternally grateful for all the wonderful hard work put in by all the staff.
Mum is having the best care in this care home, she seems really happy and always smiles when I visit, they really go out of the way to make sure she's comfortable. The food is always great, the place is always clean and tidy and her room is spacious and comfortable. A special thanks to the staff on reception, who always keeps me in the loop about Mum's welfare and appointments etc. A credit to all the staff and employers.
My mother is about to go in for a third time for respite care at Gwernllyn Care Home. I cannot tell you how grateful I am to the manager and all the staff there. As the main carer for my Mum, and the fact that I still work, I would not be able to cope without their ability to let my mother go in for respite. She really enjoys going in and is spoiled rotten. Everyone there is so kind, caring and supportive. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
I recommend this establishment without any reservation. The staff and management are friendly and nothing is too much trouble. When I was researching possible homes for my mother, I was struck by one particular comment made by a member of staff - life is not over just because you go into a care home. This comment sums up the ethos of the place. They provide excellent care in a social setting.
My father has been a resident for five months and throughout that time he has received excellent care from all the staff. Gwernllwyn Care Home has wonderful staff who create a friendly atmosphere and view each resident as an individual, taking the time to get to know them. The facilities are excellent, with each room well-equipped and comfortable. My father loves the communal areas but also appreciates he can spend time in his room resting or watching TV. He really enjoys the food provided. The staff are very helpful and we were very impressed at their efforts to settle my father into the care home initially. Visitors are made to feel welcome too - the family came for my father's birthday and the staff very kindly provided cakes and sandwiches (much more than we'd expected!).
My mother has vascular dementia and has lived at Gwernllwyn for about 5 years now after an awful brief stint in another care home. The staff here are truly amazing and have become my mother's family. The standard of care is top-class and all her physical needs are well met, but more than this, her emotional needs are understood and managed by people who really care about her. The management, reception, carers, caterers and cleaners are all superb. The facilities and surroundings are really lovely too. I wouldn't want my mother to live anywhere else and would recommend this home to anyone who has to make the awful decision to put their loved one into the hands of others.
